Entrance to Fort Massachusetts.
The fort construction began at the start of the Civil War by the South. The North's
USS Massachusetts attacked
the fort but was unable to capture it. The South declared the fight as their victory, but then abandoned the island.
The North then moved in and continued building the fort and nameed it after their
ship.
