East Galena, Il
Ulysses Grant moved to East Galena in 1860 and worked with his brothers at the
Grant Leather Shop. He and his family rented a small home. When the Civil War
started, Grant rejoined the army. After the war he returned to East Galena and
was given this home. Later they moved to Washington, D.C. and Grant was elected
President in 1865. They never lived here again.

Fulton, Il - Dutch windmill on the levee. Many of the settlers of this
community were immigrants from Netherlands. This working windmill was built to
honor their heritage.

Harold and Thelma Weirenga bought and old quarry and began building accurate
models of old Fulton buildings to preserve their heritage. They are both deceased.
