Sunrise at Guttenberg

Need to know how far and what direction some place is? Guttenberg
resident has done his best to help.

Pike's Peak State Park. A view of the Mississippi. This peak and the Pike's
peak in Colorado are named after Gen. Zebulon Pike. He also searched for the source
of the Mississippi, he didn't find it. He had more luck with peaks than river sources?

Overlook at the park.

McGregor established in 1837 as a ferry landing. The Wisconsin
settlement of Prairie du Chien is across the river.

Old feed store in McGregor.

Marquette, another town, a couple miles up the road is where
US Highway 18 bridge now crosses the Mississippi.

A casino has been established in Marquette and has adopted "Pinky" as their
mascot. The pink elephant in Marquette dates back to 1963. Bob Ries brought
Pinky to Iowa for a landmark to reside outside of his Pink Elephant Supper Club.

Effigy Mounds National Monument
These mounds exist on bluffs overlooking the Mississippi. All prevous mounds
I've seen have been on flat terrain. Also many of these mounds are effigies of
animals. This is the Great Bear Effigy Mound. From this view point the image
is not noticeable but from the air the inset shows the outline.

A view of the Mississippi from Fire Point along a hiking trail through the
national monument grounds.
